Muisto World Trade Centeristä | A memory related to the World Trade Center

Joillakuilla on erikoisia muistoja siitä, mitä he tekivät 11.9.2001. Minä en ollut lähellä katastrofipaikkaa tuona päivänä, mutta olin käynyt New Yorkin World Trade Centerissä useamman kerran, ja yksi tietty muisto tulee mieleeni, kun ihmiset puhuvat 9/11:sta. Kättelin 13.5.1992 Mihail Gorbatšovia New Yorkin arvopaperipörssin edessä ja menin sitten tapaamaan liiketuttavia World Trade Centerin 82. kerrokseen. Käyntini aikana meidän täytyi siirtyä kerros tai pari alaspäin, joten menimme portaita, mitä en ollut ennen tehnyt tuossa rakennuksessa. Toimin silloin sisäisessä tarkastuksessa ja olin kiinnostunut turvallisuudesta, ja huomasin, että porraskäytävä oli todella kapea ja askelmat olivat niin pieniä, etteivät kenkäni sopineet niille. Silloin pitäisi päästä nopeasti ulos ja ihmiset käyttäisivät hissejä." Se oli täysin vastakkainen vastaus verrattuna siihen, mitä minulle oli opetettu. Se, mitä tapahtui myöhemmin, oli äärimmäisen surullista, mutta koska olin nähnyt tilat aikaisemmin, minun oli helpompi ymmärtää, miten vaikeissa olosuhteissa siellä on täytynyt toimia.

Some people have specific memories on what they did on September 11, 2001. I was not near the location of the catastrophy that day, but I had visited the World Trade Center in New York several times, and one particular memory comes to my mind when people talk about 9/11. On May 13, 1992, I had shaken hands with Mr. Mihail Gorbachev in front of the New York Stock Exchange, and then I went to see some friends on the 82th floor of the World Trade Center. We had to go one or two floors down during my visit, so we took the stairs, which I had not done before in that building. Working in internal audit that time and having interest in security, I noticed that the stairway was really narrow and the steps were so small that my shoes did not fit on those. I said to my host: "What would people do in this building in case of fire?" He replied: "Well, no one would use stairs in an emergency situation. Then you would need to get out quickly, and people would use the elevators." That was totally the opposite I had been taught to do. It is extremely sad what happened later, but having seen the facilities before made it easier for me to understand how difficult the circumstances must have been.
