Muisto World Trade Centeristä | A memory related to the World Trade Center

Joillakuilla on erikoisia muistoja siitä, mitä he tekivät 11.9.2001. Minä en ollut lähellä katastrofipaikkaa tuona päivänä, mutta olin käynyt New Yorkin World Trade Centerissä useamman kerran, ja yksi tietty muisto tulee mieleeni, kun ihmiset puhuvat 9/11:sta. Some people have specific memories on what they did on September 11, 2001. I was not near the location of the catastrophy that day, but I had visited the World Trade Center in New York several times, and one particular memory comes to my mind when people talk about 9/11. On May 13, 1992, I had shaken hands with Mr. Mihail Gorbachev in front of the New York Stock Exchange, and then I went to see some friends on the 82th floor of the World Trade Center. We had to go one or two floors down during my visit, so we took the stairs, which I had not done before in that building. Working in internal audit that time and having interest in security, I noticed that the stairway was really narrow and the steps were so small that my shoes did not fit on those. I said to my host: "What would people do in this building in case of fire?" He replied: "Well, no one would use stairs in an emergency situation. Then you would need to get out quickly, and people would use the elevators." That was totally the opposite I had been taught to do. It is extremely sad what happened later, but having seen the facilities before made it easier for me to understand how difficult the circumstances must have been.

Maanantaiaamuna 19.8.1991 olin palaamassa kotiin Yhdysvalloista. Finnairin lento AY102 oli lähtenyt J. F. Kennedyn lentokentältä New Yorkista sunnuntaina klo 18.30, ja se oli laskeutumassa Helsinkiin maanantaiaamuna klo 9.30. Lähestyessämme Helsinkiä joku matkustaja kysyi stuertilta ohjeita jatkolennosta Moskovaan. Stuertti vastasi, että Moskovassa oli tapahtunut jotain, mutta ei tiedetty mitä, ja että matkustajan tulisi mennä lentoaseman transit-tiskille. Vaikka matkustajan kysymys oli tavanomainen, stuertin vastaus oli niin erikoinen, että ymmärsin heti, että oli tapahtunut jotain tärkeää. Pian saapumisen jälkeen kuulin vallankaappausyrityksestä Moskovassa.

In the morning of Monday, August 19, 1991, I was returning home from the United States. The Finnair flight AY102 had departed from J. F. Kennedy Airport in New York at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, and it was arriving at Helsinki at 9:30 a.m. on Monday morning. When approaching Helsinki, a passenger asked the steward for transit instruction with the intention to continue to Moscow. The steward responded that something had happened in Moscow but they did not know what it was, and the passenger should contact the transit desk at the airport. Even though the passenger's questions was a routine one, the steward's response was so strange that I immediately understood that something very important had happened. After arrival, I soon heard about the coup in Moscow.
